1. a letter written by one of Christ's Apostles to various churches and individuals. The canonical Epistles make up 21 books of the New Testament. The Epistles to Timothy and Titus are often known as the Pastoral Epistles, those of James, Peter, John, and Jude as General or Catholic Epistles.
2. a selection from one of these, read as part of the Mass or the Anglican service of Holy Communion.
